A new CMS K-5 Public Elementary School has been built in east Charlotte and was recently named Lawrence Orr Elementary School. The school is located at 4835 Shamrock Drive just off of North Sharon Amity Road and Hickory Grove Road. The school will open to students in Fall 2015.
The school is named after Lawrence Orr. According to a submission to the Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission, Mr. Orr was active in the African American community of Crab Orchard which is now known as Hickory Grove. The report states that Mr. Orr owned and operated a general store at the corner of Shamrock Drive and Hickory Grove Road (near the site of the new school) in the 1930s and 40s and that it was the only African America owned business in the area at the time.
Lawrence Orr Elementary School colors are black, metallic gold, and orange which were selected by parents, future students, and staff members. The mascot will be a lion. A logo is currently under development.
