A Center for Health, Education and Opportunity is planned for the site of what is currently the Shamrock Senior Center. The 6,000-square-foot center will open in the fall, at which point all senior programs will be moved to the nearby Methodist Home Park.
From the article:
Aldersgate, a continuing care retirement community, is the driving force behind the initiative and is supplying the center facility, which is located on the nonprofit’s 231-acre campus on Shamrock Drive. Partners include UNC Charlotte’s College of Education and College of Health and Human Services, as well as the Johnston YMCA. Seniors who live at Aldersgate will serve as volunteers for the site’s programming.
In addition to children’s education programs, the center will provide families in the area with access to community-based health and disease-prevention services.

Charlotte Agenda‘s Mary Gross shows east Charlotte some love with her recent post highlighting the five best roads to run on. Mary loves east Charlotte’s 7th Street! In the 100 degree heat today, I am not sure running will be on my agenda but east Charlotte’s great tree canopy can help runners beat the heat.

As many of you may know, to support Aldersgate’s ongoing commitment to improve the health of current and future for boomers and elders in the community we serve, we are conducting an Elder Community Engagement and Needs Assessment, looking specifically at the needs of boomers and elders on the eastside. The project is called the Shamrock Gateway Project.
Aldersgate has retained Dr. Lyndall Hare to apply her expertise in the field of gerontology to this process. She will be facilitating the community member/neighborhood resident focus groups at Aldersgate. Aldersgate has also contracted with Holleran, an independent research and consulting firm, to conduct research and prepare reporting.
We would like to invite you to participate in one of 3 Focus Groups (10 to 12 participants in each focus group) to be held on Monday June 22 at 10am – 11:30am, and 6pm – 7:30pm, and another on Tuesday June 23 from noon to 1:30pm. Your expertise and candid input will be valuable to better understanding the issues and community needs related to our boomer and elder neighbors.
Focus Groups will be held on Aldersgate’s campus at 3800 Shamrock Drive and will last about 90 minutes. You will be listed as a participant in the Focus Group, but your feedback will be confidential and anonymous.
Please call or e-mail Amanda Finnen (704-532-7099; email@example.com) to register for one of these 3 Focus Groups. We appreciate your willingness to share your views about this important topic and help Aldersgate better meet the needs of our neighbors. Should you be unable to participate in this process, please spread the word to others you think may be interested in participating.

Put on your bathing suit and head outside. Nothing beats a lawn sprinkler for cheap summer fun!
