The Charlotte Observer reports that Conn’s HomePlus will open a new store in the Independence Shopping Center at 5704 E. Independence Blvd at the end of October. The Texas-based retailer recently opened a Charlotte location in the University area and has another location on South Blvd near I-485.
Conn’s sells appliances, electronics, and furniture. The stores are about 40,000 square feet. The stores are serviced by a distribution center that opened a few years ago in Charlotte.
The Independence Shopping Center and other nearby retail locations have been negatively impacted by the on-going NCDOT work to widen US 74 or Independence Blvd. Check out our recent post about this widening project.
This area is transitioning to a more dense retail and residential node. Meridian Place is a new redevelopment project adjacent to the Independence Shopping Center on Monroe Road. The new design of Idlewild Road and Conference Drive will improve accessibility to the shopping center while maintaining visibility from the thousands of cars that travel on US 74.
