Bojangles’ Coliseum, located at 2700 East Independence Boulevard in east Charlotte, is just minutes from Center City. The landmark building opened in 1955 as Charlotte’s first coliseum featuring the largest unsupported steel dome in the world. It served as the region’s major sports and entertainment facility for over 30 years. Artists such as Elvis, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Queen have all performed in this venue.
Beginning this summer, a $16 million renovation will begin at Bojangles’ Coliseum to make improvements to seating, technology, locker rooms, building infrastructure and more to prepare for the Charlotte Checkers return in the 2015-16 season.
About $4 million of the renovations are hockey specific, as the Charlotte Checkers minor-league hockey team will be moving into Bojangles’ for its 2015-2016 season. The city has said that the Checkers will pay it rent, allowing the city to recoup this $4 million over seven years.
“This renovation breathes new life into a 60-year old community gem with the return of the Checkers,” Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority spokeswoman Laura White said. “It’s incredible to see the number of people who have shared their memories of the building over the years during this process.”…
This summer’s renovations will include wider seats, a new dressing room and an updated soundsystem and scoreboard.
