This summer the Charlotte Area Transit System or CATS opened the first modern streetcar line from Time Warner Cable Area to the Elizabeth neighborhood in east Charlotte. This is just the first step in providing additional transit choices to east Charlotte residents and businesses.
CATS has a vision for east Charlotte that includes a streetcar down Central Avenue all the way to the site of the former Eastland Mall. They’re now investigating the viability of another streetcar along Monroe Road according to this report from The Charlotte Observer.
The article highlights how a light-rail line like the Blue Line can act as a regional transportation option further away from the center city but change to operate like a streetcar focused on urban circulation closer to the city center.
