Red Sea Eritrean and Ethiopian Restaurant recently moved into the former Sonny’s BBQ building at 4301 Monroe Road. Owner Tecle “T” Gebremussie grew up in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He migrated to Kenya in 1991-2 and came to L.A. in 1993. He lived there for 4 years but life there was hard. In 1996 he married his sweetheart whom he had met in his homeland. In 1998 his cousin told him how wonderful Charlotte is and he has been here ever since. His family joined him in 1999. He opened Red Sea restaurant on Charlottowne Avenue in 2001. T lives in Eastway Park and has 3 children. His oldest, Mella, is in college at Wake Forest University.

T believes in hard work and is living the American Dream. Last Fall, Red Sea moved to its Oakhurst location! It is a fantastic space with room for big groups and a large patio. The restaurant is decorated with images from Ethiopia and beautiful straw baskets giving patrons an authentic Ethiopian experience. And the food! Ethiopian food is served on a large round piece of gluten free bread. The diner tears of pieces of the bread to scoop up the delicious food. There are lots of vegetarian options! Red Sea has a full bar with local beers, wine and liquor and is known for its traditional Ethiopian coffee service. It has lots of great reviews on Google. One review stated: “Vegan Heaven!”
